🍭 The Vatican Wrote an AI Doctrine ⛪
The Weirdest AI Headline Ever

Good morning. The Pope is publishing an AI doctrine.
Which means somewhere in the Vatican, a cardinal had to ask:
“Wait… what exactly is a prompt?”
Let’s dive in 👇

Pope & AI
📜 The Vatican's First AI Doctrine
The Bite:
Pope Leo XIV will publish Magnifica Humanitas on May 25.
It’s the first papal encyclical focused entirely on artificial intelligence.
The document addresses the protection of human dignity in the age of AI with Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah appearing alongside Vatican cardinals and theologians.
Leo signed the encyclical on May 15, exactly 135 years after his papal namesake Leo XIII signed Rerum Novarum, the foundational text of Catholic social teaching on labor and industrial capitalism.
Days earlier, the Vatican also established a formal AI commission drawing from seven Vatican institutions to coordinate Church policy on the technology.
Snacks:
Leo studied mathematics before entering the priesthood, so he’s the first pope with a quantitative background presenting doctrine on a deeply technical technology.
The Vatican issued internal AI guidelines effective January 1, 2025, requiring disclosure of AI-generated content and banning AI that conflicts with Church mission.
Olah’s presence is significant: Anthropic is currently suing the Trump administration over restrictions tied to a Pentagon supply-chain risk designation.
VP Vance said May 19 he is "looking forward to reading" the encyclical.
The commission draws representatives from seven Vatican bodies, including the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
Why it Bites:
The Catholic Church just did something no government has managed yet: it wrote a unified, institution-wide position on AI and put a named co-founder of a frontier lab on the stage to present it.
That's not simply a symbolic gesture.
Leo is deliberately framing AI as this century's industrial revolution.
Just like his namesake did 135 years ago to establish the Church's authority on labor rights, wages, and the obligations employers owe workers.
The timing is almost absurdly loaded.
Olah stands in the Vatican the same month his company is in federal court arguing the U.S. military shouldn't use Claude for mass surveillance.
The encyclical is expected to cover labor, justice, and the effects of AI on working environments. That means a document “co-presented by Anthropic” may end up making the moral case against exactly the kind of deployment the Pentagon demanded.
Whether or not you care about papal authority:
The world’s biggest institution just created a doctrinal framework for AI before the EU could.
