🍭 The Robotaxi Race Has Started 🏁

China Is Already Winning This

In partnership with

Good morning. The future has self-driving cars.
The present has those cars… driving around in circles waiting for demand.

Let’s dive in 👇

🍭 What’s Cookin’:

  • NVIDIA wants to own robotaxi infrastructure

  • China is already scaling autonomous fleets

  • Alibaba hikes AI chip prices hard

  • “AI-free” labels start popping up

The Robotaxi Race
🚕 NVIDIA Bets on Everyone While China Ships

The Bite:

This week at GTC 2026, NVIDIA didn't just talk about chips.

It announced a strategy: become the unavoidable infrastructure layer underneath every robotaxi fleet on the planet, regardless of who wins the race.

Also, Jensen Huang added BYD, Hyundai, Nissan, and Geely to its DRIVE Hyperion. Which is a partner list that includes both Chinese and Western automakers simultaneously.

The Uber deal targets 28 cities across four continents, only by 2028.

Meanwhile, China isn't waiting.

Pony.ai already delivered 100+ seventh-gen robotaxis in Guangzhou.

It's already hit positive unit economics in two tier-1 cities.
And is targeting 3,000 vehicles by end of year.

The West is scheduling pilots. China is shipping hardware.

Snacks:

  • NVIDIA released three open-source physical AI models at GTC. One of them is Alpamayo 1.5 for autonomous driving, which has already more than 100,000 downloads from developers.

  • NVIDIA's new Halos OS is a high certified safety architecture designed to be the standard safety layer across all Level 4 partner fleets.

  • WeRide's NVIDIA-powered HPC 3.0 stack cuts total cost of ownership by 84%. Hardware per vehicle is already at ~$40,000 and dropping another 15% at scale.

  • Pony.ai's Gen-7 AV kit costs 70% less than its previous generation. Bluetooth unlocking, voice control, and pre-trip climate included. Far from a prototype.

  • An independent analyst flagged this week that NVIDIA's physical AI ecosystem lock-in mirrors exactly what CUDA did to datacenter computing.

  • Bloomberg dropped a cold-water piece yesterday: robotaxi fleets are projected to increase urban traffic congestion. And cities aren't ready.

Why it Bites:

NVIDIA's move here is surgical.

By supplying BYD and Geely on the same platform as Nissan and Hyundai, it has made itself geopolitically neutral and commercially essential.

It doesn't matter who wins the US-China robotaxi race, because NVIDIA collects the infrastructure toll either way.

That's NVIDIA positioning itself as a platform company.
Pulling the oldest trick in tech.

The China angle is the part most Western coverage is underselling.

Pony.ai isn't running a pilot.

Today it's already profitable per unit, in two cities, and at scale.

The conversation in Washington is still about regulatory approval timelines.
The conversation in Guangzhou is about fleet expansion targets.

And the Bloomberg congestion warning deserves more attention than it's getting.

Everyone is racing to deploy robotaxis.
Which are vehicles that never park, never stop, and just keep circling.

But no one is asking whether cities can absorb a few hundred thousand vehicles.
