The Bite:

The Pentagon's chief AI officer, Cameron Stanley, disclosed in a sworn court filing this week that xAI's Grok Gov model was used during the U.S. war with Iran.

The filing states the model enabled U.S. forces to deploy over 2,000 munitions against 2,000 distinct targets within 96 hours during Operation Epic Fury.

Stanley described Grok as one of four AI models capable of supporting national security applications and one of three cleared for top-secret networks.

The disclosure surfaced in a Department of Justice motion to dismiss a lawsuit alleging xAI's Colossus 2 data center violates the Clean Air Act.

Stanley called the data center "vital to national security missions, including targeting, intelligence, readiness, and recruitment."

Why it Bites:

The Pentagon didn't disclose Grok's role in Iran because Congress demanded it or because a journalist forced it out. It disclosed it because the DOJ needed to protect a data center from a lawsuit.

National security was the legal shield, and the confession was the evidence.

That framing matters.

The first public confirmation that a commercial AI chatbot helped target live munitions at scale came wrapped in a real estate dispute.

And it's not just Grok. Stanley's filing names FOUR AI models cleared for national security use and three for top-secret operations. We don't know which others were involved in targeting.

We also don't know how much human review sat between the model's output and the launch order.

What we do know is the Pentagon's own language:
The system "greatly increased operational efficiency."

In military procurement, that phrase usually means fewer people in the loop.

The West Point analysis puts the math in plain sight:
1,000 targets generated per hour, 1,700 civilian deaths by May.

The speed is the product. The casualties are the cost.

And the only reason we're having this conversation is because someone needed to keep a power plant running.

Senator Gillibrand's bill would ban AI from nuclear decisions and restrict lethal targeting to human operators.

But by the time the bill gets a vote, that precedent may already have a body count.
