Qualcomm and AWS announced a multi-generation deal on September 8 to co-develop custom AI inference chips for AWS data centers.

Qualcomm issued Amazon a warrant to buy 25 million Qualcomm shares at $161.26 each, worth roughly $4 billion at issuance.

The warrant vests in tranches as Amazon signs agreements, places orders, and buys up to $60 billion of Qualcomm server chips and related technology.

Qualcomm said 3.75 million shares vested immediately against early purchase commitments.

Qualcomm shares rose about 4% on the news.

Why it Bites:

Amazon is being paid in equity to become a customer. That's the deal.

It's also the fourth of its kind in about a month.

Marvell handed Google a $12.2 billion warrant.
Nvidia put $1.5 billion into SB Energy and backed the credit.
SB Energy then issued OpenAI $5.5 billion of its own warrants.

The chip market has stopped clearing on price.

Price competition assumes buyers choosing between comparable parts.

There are maybe six companies on Earth that can absorb multiple generations of custom silicon, and all six know it. So suppliers stopped competing on cost per watt and started competing on how much of themselves they're willing to hand over.

Nvidia spent three years as the bottleneck.
Qualcomm showed up late with a credible inference part and had to buy a seat.

And notice what didn't get disclosed: committed volume, delivery timeline.
The $60 billion is the ceiling on the coupon, not a purchase order.

If Amazon never places one, it loses nothing.

So for the next partnership, check which direction the money is actually pointing.
