⚖️ Has No Legal Way To Happen

The Bite:

Four paying AI subscribers filed an antitrust class action lawsuit Friday in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

The suit names Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google, alleging they illegally coordinated to slow AI development.

It points to Dario Amodei's September 12 essay calling for an industry-wide slowdown, and to the public responses from Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Demis Hassabis that same day.

They argue the coordination reduces the value of the subscriptions they pay for.

The same day, Anthropic named Faculty, Accenture's AI unit, as its first embedded evaluator, with access comparable to an Anthropic employee's.

Anthropic and Accenture each expect to invest at least $1 billion over five years, and Anthropic pays for the evaluation work directly.

Snacks:

• The suit is brought on behalf of a proposed nationwide class of paid subscribers to ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini.

• It cites a July 2026 statement signed by senior lab staff acknowledging "intense competitive pressure not to unilaterally slow."

• Faculty is the British AI firm Accenture acquired in March, moving more than 400 specialists across.

• Accenture is already a Claude customer, and its shares rose 8% after hours on the announcement.

• More than 100 researchers, including Geoffrey Hinton, asked the same day for evaluators with no commercial business with the labs they check.

• Senator Josh Hawley said in a recent hearing there is "no world" in which he grants the labs an antitrust exemption.

Why it Bites:

Coordinate the slowdown and you get sued for running a cartel. Go it alone and you end up paying a company that already buys your product to sit inside and check your work.

Both happened Friday. Anthropic took the second door, and the terms are printed in the announcement: Faculty gets the access, Anthropic writes the check.

A few hours later, a hundred-plus researchers called for evaluators with no commercial ties to the labs they examine.

None of this is hidden.

Anthropic's own post says the long-term money should come from pooled or government funding. Neither exists, and the government just showed its hand.

On Saturday, Trump introduced an AI Force with no budget, no structure, no timeline, and a czar to be named.
