๐Ÿญ Siri Got Kicked Out Of Europe ๐ŸŽ

AI Could Soon Build Its Own Replacement

Good morning.
Apple just told 450 million EU iPhone users they can't have the new Siri.

Strange? You think?

Letโ€™s dive in ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿญ Whatโ€™s Cookinโ€™:

  • Apple just pulled Siri AI from every iPhone and iPad in Europe

  • OpenAI quietly walked back its autonomous researcher goal

  • Taiwan is considering making AI chip exports to China a crime

Apple's
๐ŸŽ Siri Got Kicked Out Of Europe

The Bite:

Apple announced that Siri AI will not ship on iPhones or iPads in the EU when iOS 27 launches this fall.

The company says the Digital Markets Act's (DMA) interoperability requirements would force it to give third-party AI systems "nearly unlimited access" to a user's device.

Apple proposed a "Trusted System Agent" intermediary that would let rival assistants access the same capabilities as Siri AI while preserving privacy.

The European Commission rejected every version.

And then fired back, saying Apple never tried to build a compliant solution.
Instead, Apple asked for a blanket exemption from its interoperability obligations.

Siri AI will still work on macOS 27 and visionOS 27 in the EU. There is no timeline for iOS or iPadOS availability. Apple also confirmed Siri AI will not launch in China.

Snacks:

  • This is the third consecutive year Apple has withheld AI features from EU users over DMA disputes

  • EU Commission spokesperson: the decision "is Apple's and Apple's only"

  • Apple proposed an 18-month phased rollout, the Commission said no

  • EU developers can't test or build with Siri AI features on iOS or iPadOS betas

  • Siri AI is the centerpiece of iOS 27, unveiled at WWDC yesterday

Why it Bites:

Both sides are telling a different story about the same meeting.

Apple says it proposed a privacy-preserving bridge and the Commission wouldn't engage. The Commission says Apple walked in asking for an exemption, not a compromise.

But here's the thing: who's right is not the important part.
What really matters is what this standoff produces.

Siri AI works on Macs and Vision Pro.
On the device 90% of Apple's users actually carry, it doesn't exist.

The EU has a regulation that, for the third year running, has resulted in European consumers getting less and less functionality.

The DMA was designed to open markets. In practice, it's creating a version of the iPhone that's measurably worse than the one sold in the US, Japan, or Brazil.

Apple gets to frame that as regulatory overreach.
The Commission gets to frame it as corporate stubbornness.

Meanwhile, the 450 million people in between get a phone with only a whiff of Siri.

That's what happens when you cross an immovable brand with an unenforceable regulation.

The gap between EU users and everyone else only gets wider.
