Google Goes Cyber-First

Good morning. Reddit is changing the locks to keep AI out.
"Officer, the burglars left in 2020. Can I still file a report?"
Letโs dive in ๐
๐ญ Whatโs Cookinโ:
Google's new frontier model is out, just not for you
Reddit is killing RSS to stop AI scrapers (about six years late)
OpenAI caught Moonshot-linked users peeking at its model's notes
Reddit
๐ Locks Up After The Robbery
The Bite:
Reddit announced Wednesday it will end support for RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds on November 13.
RSS lets apps and feed readers automatically check a page for new posts, and many third-party tools, bots and moderator alerts depend on it.
New requests for public API access stop on October 31.
All remaining public API access ends in March 2027.
Reddit cites large-scale scraping and automated abuse as the reason.
Snacks:
Reddit says there is no RSS replacement for anyone outside communities they moderate.
More than 14,000 apps and bots have already registered.
Reddit licenses its data to Google, in a 2024 deal worth roughly $60 million a year, and to OpenAI.
It has sued Anthropic and Perplexity over alleged scraping.
"Other revenue," which includes data licensing, hit $43 million last quarter, up 24% and about 5% of total revenue.
Why it Bites:
Reddit says itโs changing the locks to keep AI scrapers out.
Small detail: the scrapers have been inside for about six years.
Most of the big models were already trained on Reddit threads.
Google and OpenAI are already paying, and their deals keep running.
$43 million on data licensing last quarter, up 24%.
The ones left outside are the late arrivals.
And every platform with a comment section is taking notes.
Even though there are other ways to limit scraping, the playbook seems to be locking everyone out. Six years late.
The first wave of AI got Reddit for free. All the next ones gets an invoice.

Analytics on Live Data Without Leaving Postgres
When analytics on Postgres slows down, most teams add a second database. Then come the pipelines, the sync jobs, and a copy of your data that's always a little behind.
TimescaleDB takes a different approach: extend Postgres instead of splitting away from it. Hypertables partition your data automatically as volume grows. Hypercore compression cuts storage up to 95%. Continuous aggregates keep dashboards live without re-querying everything.
CERN runs Postgres this way for sensor data from the Large Hadron Collider.
No split architecture, no pipeline lag, no new query language to learn. Same SQL, same drivers, same tools.
