⏸️ Paused, Then Shipped 20+ Things

The Bite:

OpenAI held its annual DevDay developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, September 29.

The headline launch was Dots, always-on AI agents that live inside ChatGPT. Each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra from its own cloud computer and works toward user goals around the clock.

Beyond that, OpenAI made more than 20 announcements across ChatGPT, Codex and its API.

Dots are rolling out now to ChatGPT Pro 200 and Business Premium subscribers.

The launch came days after OpenAI said it halted training of its latest models.

Snacks:

• Dots connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins and can use your laptop with permission.

• When idle, dots run "proactive research" through your connected apps using read-only tools.

• Meta launched Muse, a comparable always-on agent, on September 8.

• OpenAI hired OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger in February to lead its personal agents work.

• The new GPT-6.1 Sol nearly matches Astra on agentic coding at one-fifth of Astra's token price.

• New $200 Pro subscribers now get 10x Plus usage, down from 20x.

Why it Bites:

Over the weekend, OpenAI's message basically said:
"We need to slow down and look hard at what our agents are doing."

Then, on Tuesday:
"Meet dots. They never log off."

The agents behind the pause and the agents on stage are the same category of product.

Dots gets its own computer, a browser, 4,000 apps, and standing permission to look for work while you're not watching.

The training has been paused. The shipping never stopped.

This whole category started earlier this year as OpenClaw, a free, open-source hobby project that companies told employees not to install.

Then Meta and OpenAI both went after its creator.
OpenAI got him, but Meta shipped first.

Now OpenClaw is back dressed as Muse and Dots, with smoother onboarding, a safety page, and a monthly bill.

The risk didn't get smaller. It got a tuxedo and a subscription.
