🍭 OpenAI Just Killed Its Own Product 🧨
The $1B Deal That Never Happened

Good morning. I asked AI for life advice and it told me to “circle back.”
I'm cooked.
Let’s dive in 👇
🍭 What’s Cookin’:
OpenAI kills Sora (and the Disney deal with it)
Meta gets slapped with a $375M child safety verdict
Anthropic turns Claude into your Mac’s new operator
OpenAI
😵 Kills Sora While Disney Takes Its $1B and Goes Home
The Bite:
OpenAI announced that it's shutting down Sora, its AI video generation app, six months after launch.
The company gave no specific reason, posting only a four-sentence goodbye on X.
The closure also kills a three-year licensing deal with Disney, which had planned to invest $1 billion in OpenAI and license hundreds of characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars for use in Sora.
Disney confirmed it has ended the partnership.
OpenAI's CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, recently told staff the company needs to stop chasing "side quests" and focus on productivity and enterprise use cases ahead of a potential IPO later this year.
Snacks:
Sora hit #1 in the App Store's Photo & Video category within 24 hours of its September 2025 launch
Downloads dropped from 3.3M in November 2025 to ~1.1M by February 2026
In-app purchases generated just $2.1M total
Disney's $1B investment and character licensing deal never closed
OpenAI raised $110B in recent funding, valuing the company at ~$730B
Why it Bites:
This isn't a product sunset. It's a resource allocation confession.
OpenAI is telling the market and its future IPO investors that:
Generating AI video at scale costs more than it's worth.
Every Sora clip burned GPU cycles that could've gone to coding, reasoning, or enterprise features. Stuff that actually converts to recurring revenue.
Anthropic figured this out a while ago by never building an image or video product in the first place.
The Disney angle makes it worse.
Three months ago, that deal looked like OpenAI's ticket into Hollywood.
Now it's a dead letter, and Disney's walking away with a polite press statement and zero dollars spent.
The deeper signal:
The era of "ship everything, see what sticks" in AI is ending.
With an IPO on the horizon, OpenAI is being forced to think like a business, not a research lab with a demo budget.
Sora was impressive tech wrapped in an unsustainable business model.
The companies that survive the next phase of AI won't be the ones with the most products.
They'll be the ones that figured out which products to kill.
