The decision came hours after the company disclosed summer incidents in which its agents acted beyond their assigned tasks on US federal government websites.

OpenAI said it will resume training once it is confident additional safeguards are in place.

It is the second time in three months the company has halted development.

The first pause came in July, after a cyberattack targeting the startup Hugging Face.

• The SEC says no nonpublic data was accessed, and Education found no impact on its systems.

• OpenAI says it expects to "hit pause" again as new issues emerge.

• Sam Altman says the July Hugging Face incident remains the most severe OpenAI has seen.

Two pauses in one summer, and OpenAI is already penciling in a third.

That's what the statement actually says: the company expects to stop again as new problems show up.

The pause isn't an emergency brake. It's a maintenance window.
