🍭 Mythos Is Back, On Washington's Terms 🛡️

Who Gets AI Now?

Good morning. Washington spent two weeks deciding who deserves good cybersecurity: about a hundred companies, and you're probably not one of them.

Let’s dive in 👇

🍭 What’s Cookin’:

  • Anthropic got Mythos back, sort of, for a few dozen friends

  • xAI sued Colorado's AI law out of existence (for now)

  • The companies building the job-killing AI just launched a retraining fund (cute)

Anthropic
🛡️ Mythos Returns On A Leash

The Bite:

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter to Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown authorizing a partial restoration of Claude Mythos 5.

The model can now be redeployed to roughly 100 US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure.

Approved entities include Project Glasswing partners, Fortune 500 firms, government agencies, and critical infrastructure operators across energy, finance, healthcare, and telecommunications.

Foreign-national employees of approved organizations can access Mythos 5 without individual export licenses.

Claude Fable 5, the public-facing model suspended on June 12, remains offline for all general users worldwide.

Snacks:

  • The original June 12 directive shut down both models for all customers within hours of receipt

  • Lutnick's letter cited "appropriate safeguards" now in place for trusted partners

  • Anthropic's updated privacy policy with government-issued ID verification takes effect July 8, likely the mechanism for broader US restoration

  • The 60-day executive order deadline for NSA, Treasury, and CISA to complete a covered frontier model framework lands August 1

  • OpenAI's Sam Altman said governments should not decide which private organizations get access to frontier AI

  • API calls to claude-fable-5 still return errors as of June 30

Why it Bites:

The model came back.
But the access model that came back with it is the real story.

Two weeks ago, Mythos 5 was available to every Glasswing partner and enterprise customer Anthropic had vetted itself. Now it's available to a list the Commerce Department wrote.

Anthropic didn't choose the hundred. Washington did.

And that’s the whole point.

The June 2 executive order asked labs to voluntarily give models to the government for 30 days before release.

OpenAI followed it with GPT-5.6 Sol. But Anthropic didn't volunteer anything.

Its model was seized, held for two weeks, and returned with conditions attached.
So the voluntary framework now has a mandatory cousin.

Every frontier lab watching this is doing the same math.

If you ship a model that scares a regulator, the government doesn't need legislation.
It has export controls, and export controls move faster than Congress.

Well, defenders got their model back, but Fable 5 is still gone for everyone else.

Nobody's said when. Nobody's said why not.
