The Bite:

Moonshot AI released the open weights for Kimi K3, making the model free to download, modify, and self-host.

With 2.8 trillion parameters, it is the largest open-weight model publicly available.

The model carries a 1M-token context window.

Three days earlier, a 25-company letter led by Nvidia urged US policymakers NOT to restrict downloadable model weights.

OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google did not sign it.

Meanwhile, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios accused Moonshot of training K3 on banned Nvidia chips and running large-scale distillation against US models.

Why it Bites:

Yesterday we talked about how twenty-five companies told Washington that downloadable model weights shouldn't be restricted, while OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google disagreed.

In summary, NVIDIA sells the hardware whether the weights are open or closed, but open weights mean more buyers.

Then Sunday night happened and the whole debate turned decorative, because Moonshot pushed 2.8 trillion parameters to Hugging Face and the question of whether anyone should have a frontier-class open model got answered by the fact that everyone now does.

And there's a nastier layer under it.

Kratsios says K3 was trained on banned Nvidia chips and distilled from Anthropic's Fable. If he's right, the restriction being debated had already been routed around before anyone drafted the letter.

The part that lands on your desk is smaller and more irritating.

Bedrock, Foundry, and Vertex don't carry it. The model developers just picked over leading US systems on front-end coding isn't available anywhere your company already has a contract with, so adopting it is a procurement fight, not a checkbox.
