Why OpenAI Is Suddenly Retreating

Good morning. Greg Brockman is now holding OpenAI together like a dad carrying 14 grocery bags because nobody wants to make two trips.
Let’s dive in 👇
🍭 What’s Cookin’:
OpenAI kills the side quests
Gemini 4.0 lands at Google I/O
Europe’s AI dreams hit an energy bill from hell
OpenAI
📜 Kills The Side Quests
The Bite:
OpenAI is merging ChatGPT, Codex, and its developer API into a single product organization.
This comes under co-founder Greg Brockman, who now permanently leads product strategy alongside his existing infrastructure role.
The restructuring formalizes an interim arrangement that began when Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of AGI deployment, went on medical leave in April.
The company has shelved Sora, adult mode, and OpenAI for Science, described internally as "side quests".
Now it’s concentrating all engineering on a single agentic platform ahead of a targeted Q4 2026 IPO at roughly $852 billion.
Snacks:
ChatGPT's share of AI web traffic dropped from 86.7% to 64.5% over the past 12 months; Gemini rose from 5.7% to 21.5%
Brockman said on a recent podcast that OpenAI's compute is "not enough for even a personal assistant and the Codex line"
Cursor hit $2B in annualized revenue and is raising at a $50B valuation
Sora's shutdown followed the collapse of a planned $1B Disney investment
Altman declared a "code red" in December, telling staff to refocus on core ChatGPT
The Musk v. Altman jury begins deliberations Monday with up to $134B in claimed damages
Why it Bites:
OpenAI spent 2025 trying to be everything: video generator, science lab, coding IDE, chatbot, browser… Result?
A company bleeding market share to Google on the consumer side and to Anthropic and Cursor on the developer side.
Brockman merging everything into one org isn't a bold vision for the agentic future. It's just what happens when you run out of compute and can't afford to run separate teams anymore.
OpenAI is now building for the IPO, not for the frontier.
The new strategy is a simpler product story: one platform, one subscription, one billing relationship… easier to pitch to institutional investors than a portfolio of half-shipped experiments.
Every decision from here to Q4 will be filtered through that lens.
Because the real risk is that consolidation locks OpenAI into the ChatGPT form factor right as the market fragments.
Cursor proved that developers will pay for a purpose-built coding agent.
Anthropic proved that enterprises want a model company that doesn't also run a consumer app competing for the same GPUs.
Google is about to test whether distributing AI across billions of devices matters more than owning a single chat window.
OpenAI's answer to all three is:
One app, one team, one co-founder holding it together.
That's either disciplined or desperate. The IPO filing will tell us which.
