The Bite:

GitHub Copilot switched from flat-rate subscription pricing to token-based billing.

All monthly individual subscribers were migrated automatically.

Under the new model, each plan includes a set number of GitHub AI Credits with usage calculated based on input, output, and cached tokens at per-model API rates.

Copilot Pro's $10/month plan gets 1,000 GitHub AI Credits.

Code completions and Next Edit Suggestions remain free and unmetered.

The token-based billing applies to chat, agentic workflows, and code review, which now also counts against GitHub Actions minutes.

Annual Pro and Pro+ subscribers keep the old billing until their current term expires.

• A token is roughly three-quarters of a word; a 10,000-line codebase runs about 12,000–13,000 tokens

• Under the old model, users consumed 3–8x the token value their subscription covered, with GitHub absorbing the difference

Why it Bites:

For years, GitHub priced Copilot like a gym membership: flat monthly fee, all-you-can-eat compute, and a quiet assumption that most users would never push hard enough to matter.

That model worked when Copilot was autocomplete.
And it stopped working when it became an agent.

Agentic sessions burn tokens at a rate the flat fee was never designed to cover.
