๐Ÿญ Copilot Devs Are Getting The Bill ๐Ÿ’ธ

GitHub Just Changed The Game

Good morning. The intern just checked his Copilot token usage for the morning and quietly closed his laptop. And left.

Letโ€™s dive in ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿญ Whatโ€™s Cookinโ€™:

  • GitHub put a meter on Copilot

  • Anthropic quietly filed its IPO paperwork (before OpenAI)

  • Nvidia entered the PC chip game with RTX Spark

  • OpenAI models just went live on AWS Bedrock

GitHub
๐Ÿ’ธ Copilot Now Charges By Token

The Bite:

GitHub Copilot switched from flat-rate subscription pricing to token-based billing.

All monthly individual subscribers were migrated automatically.

Under the new model, each plan includes a set number of GitHub AI Credits with usage calculated based on input, output, and cached tokens at per-model API rates.

Copilot Pro's $10/month plan gets 1,000 GitHub AI Credits.

Code completions and Next Edit Suggestions remain free and unmetered.

The token-based billing applies to chat, agentic workflows, and code review, which now also counts against GitHub Actions minutes.

Annual Pro and Pro+ subscribers keep the old billing until their current term expires.

Snacks:

  • A token is roughly three-quarters of a word; a 10,000-line codebase runs about 12,000โ€“13,000 tokens

  • Under the old model, users consumed 3โ€“8x the token value their subscription covered, with GitHub absorbing the difference

  • One Reddit user projected their monthly bill jumping from $29 to approximately $750

  • Business and Enterprise customers get temporary promotional credits ($30 and $70/month) through August 2026

  • GitHub has not published a full breakdown of per-token rates for each supported model tier

  • GitHub surpassed $2B in annual recurring revenue, with Copilot as the primary growth driver

Why it Bites:

For years, GitHub priced Copilot like a gym membership: flat monthly fee, all-you-can-eat compute, and a quiet assumption that most users would never push hard enough to matter.

That model worked when Copilot was autocomplete.
And it stopped working when it became an agent.

Agentic sessions burn tokens at a rate the flat fee was never designed to cover.
GitHub absorbed that gap. Not anymore.

The risk hits small teams and solo devs hardest.
Enterprise customers get three months of promotional credits and volume leverage.

Any indie developer running a complex refactoring session on a frontier model could face an unpredictable bill.

The effects:
Claude Code, Cursor, and open-source coding assistants just inherited a pricing advantage they didn't have to earn. Every developer re-evaluating their Copilot spend is now also evaluating the alternatives.

This is the first major AI coding tool to move from subscription to metered pricing.
But unfortunately, it won't be the last.

The era where companies subsidized inference to grow market share is winding down.

And developers are the first to feel what AI actually costs at the meter.
