🍭 Claude Wants Your ID Now 🪪

Privacy Paywall Pops Up

In partnership with

Good morning. The intern tried to verify his identity with a Costco card.
He’s no longer with us.

Let’s dive in 👇

🍭 What’s Cookin’:

  • Anthropic asks for your ID to use Claude

  • Nvidia unveils Lyra 2 - 3D world generation

  • Claude Opus 4.7 goes fully live

Anthropic
🪪 Just Asked For ID At The Door

The Bite:

Anthropic quietly published a new identity-verification policy for Claude and began enforcing it for certain users over the following days.

Some users are now prompted to submit a government-issued photo ID and, in some cases, a live selfie, before continuing to use the product.

The document can be a passport, a driver's license, or a national ID card, and verification is handled by Persona Identities, a third-party KYC vendor.

No U.S. regulation currently requires this.

Anthropic has implemented it on its own, even though none of its competing chatbots require ID to sign up.

Snacks:

  • Policy went live on Claude's Help Center on April 14, with enforcement ramping April 15–16.

  • Accepted IDs: physical passports, driver's licenses, state/provincial cards, national IDs. Mobile IDs, screenshots, and student IDs are rejected.

  • Persona holds the ID and selfie data; Anthropic says it does not store or use it for training.

  • Persona was linked to a separate Discord breach in October 2025 that exposed roughly 70,000 government IDs.

  • Anthropic lists four reasons for post-verification bans:

    • usage policy violations,

    • account creation from "unsupported locations,"

    • ToS violations,

    • and under-18 usage.

  • Multiple adult users have already reported being flagged as minors and suspended, with project histories wiped mid-appeal.

Why it Bites:

The privacy-first AI company just became the only major chatbot to ask for your passport.

Anthropic's entire market wedge against OpenAI was trust.

Well, trust just got a new price tag:
A scan of your face and a photo of your ID sitting on a vendor's servers.

The stated reasons (abuse prevention, under-18 enforcement, compliance) are defensible in isolation. The strategic cost isn't.

Every privacy-conscious user who switched to Claude last year because OpenAI felt “too surveilling” now has a reason to switch again.
And the competitors are, for the moment, free of this friction.

Anthropic has effectively priced in a churn event to solve a policy problem.

The deeper signal is where frontier AI is heading.

Treating model access as a regulated category before any government actually requires it is a quiet but real shift.

If the Claude precedent sticks, and "log in with your ID" becomes the default interaction layer for powerful AI:

The companies that resist the longest will win the short-term migration.
And the ones that adopt it first will have set the norm.

Now, what do you think that has the most long-term value?
