📂 Leaked Its Own Source Code

The Bite:

Anthropic accidentally shipped the entire source code of Claude Code.

A misconfigured debug file in a routine update exposed 512,000 lines of TypeScript across 1,906 files, including unreleased features, internal architecture, and model performance data.

Security researcher Chaofan Shou spotted it first and posted to X.
Within hours, the codebase was mirrored across GitHub.

Anthropic issued DMCA takedowns that hit roughly 8,100 repositories.
Even thousands of legitimate forks of its own public repo.

Following the leak, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) sent a letter to CEO Dario Amodei.

He questioned why Anthropic would roll back internal safety protocols while Claude is embedded in U.S. national security operations.

Snacks:

• This is the second time in just over a year that Claude Code source material has leaked publicly.

• The exposed code revealed 44 hidden feature flags, a background "persistent assistant" mode, and a Tamagotchi-style companion called "Buddy" with a planned April 1–7 rollout window.

• A developer used separate AI tools to rewrite Claude Code's functionality in other languages to dodge the DMCA.

• Gottheimer called the leak a national security risk: if Claude is replicated, "we sacrifice the competitive edge."

• Anthropic called it "a release packaging issue caused by human error, not a security breach."

Why it Bites:

The leak itself isn't existential.

Because no model weights escaped.
And no customer data was touched.

What did escape is arguably more valuable to competitors: the orchestration logic.

How Claude Code manages multi-step tasks, handles memory across sessions, coordinates agents, and wraps DRM around API calls.

That's the layer every AI lab is racing to build right now, and Anthropic just gave them the blueprints for free.

So the real damage is structural.

Anthropic sells itself as the safety-first lab.
Its entire brand is built on the premise that this company is more careful than the others.

And leaking your source code via a .npmignore misconfiguration, then accidentally nuking 8,000 GitHub repos while trying to clean it up, and getting a congressional letter the next morning… That's not a safety narrative.

And the timing couldn't be worse.

Anthropic is reportedly preparing for an IPO.

Investors want execution stories, not incident response timelines.

Claude is now tangled in the same national security politics that got it blacklisted from Pentagon contracts.

And the congressman is simultaneously defending Anthropic's right to government work and questioning whether it can be trusted with it.

That's the kind of contradiction that follows a company into its S-1.
