Apple has delayed its first smart glasses.

The reveal is now targeted for WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) in June 2027, with a consumer release by the end of the year.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that teams building the glasses treat privacy as the top priority.

Apple is weighing scaled-back versions, including one with no camera at all.

Why it Bites:

Apple is spending an extra year designing a camera that strangers will agree to stand in front of.

That's the problem it's actually trying to solve, and it doesn't live on the glasses, but on everyone else's face.

Look at the feature list with the lens removed: directions, translation, notifications, Siri, music. All of it works. All of it is why a normal person would buy these.

So, the camera isn't there for the wearer.
It's there because the capture is what turns eyewear into a platform.
Which makes the privacy engineering something other than protection.

The real question here is whether the camera is really necessary, and if so, how to make people less uncomfortable around it.

Because a tamper-detecting light doesn't make recording safe, it just makes recording legible. And a camera that sees but doesn't save is still a camera aimed at someone who was never asked.

Meta already ran this experiment and is in court over the results.
Apple watched, took notes, and moved the date.

The camera is still coming. Apple just wants “better manners” around it.
