Apple's AI deal with Google runs deeper than previously reported.

According to The Information:

Apple has full access to the Gemini model inside its own data center facilities.
Not just the right to surface it in Siri.

That access allows Apple to produce smaller, task-specific models through a process called distillation, where a large model transfers knowledge to a leaner one.

Those distilled models can run directly on Apple devices, faster and without cloud dependency.

Apple plans to unveil the new Siri capabilities at WWDC this June.

Apple doesn't want to say "we use Google AI."
They want to say "Apple Intelligence."

The distillation approach lets them do that technically accurately while pulling from the best available model in the world.

What this really signals:

Apple has accepted that it can't win the foundation model race right now.

And instead of burning billions trying to match Gemini, they're renting access to the top of the stack and spending their energy on the distribution layer.

Which is the one place Google can never own: the iPhone.

The risk is dependency.

If the deal changes, Apple's on-device intelligence collapses back to whatever AFM can deliver alone.
