Mythos Model Melts Bank Defenses

In partnership with

Good morning. Claude just found a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD and now every financial regulator on the planet is having an emergency meeting about it.

Let’s dive in 👇

🍭 What’s Cookin’:

  • Claude Mythos has banks on edge

  • Apple is building smart glasses (again, but better)

  • OpenAI enterprise is quietly exploding

  • AI chips are surviving literal hell (1300ºF)

Claude Mythos Preview
🏦 When AI Breaks Banks Before Hackers Do

The Bite:

The Bank of England, the Financial Conduct Authority, and HM Treasury.

These UK financial regulators are holding urgent talks with the National Cyber Security Centre to assess cybersecurity risks posed by Anthropic's Claude Mythos Preview model.

Regulators will brief major British banks, insurers, and exchanges within the next two weeks on the potential threats.

The issue is set to feature in an upcoming meeting of the Cross Market Operational Resilience Group, which coordinates responses to systemic risks across the financial sector.

This follows a meeting convened by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent with major Wall Street banks last Friday to discuss the model’s cyber risk potential.

The Bank of Canada also convened major lenders and financial authorities to discuss the cybersecurity implications.

Snacks:

  • Mythos Preview identified thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities across every major operating system and every major web browser

  • A 27-year-old bug was found in OpenBSD, which is a system famous for its security hardening

  • 12 partner organizations in Project Glasswing, plus 40+ additional orgs with access

  • Anthropic committed $100 million in usage credits and priced Mythos at $25/$125 per million tokens

  • U.S., UK, and Canada are coordinating responses, treating this as a systemic financial risk

  • Authorities are assessing whether AI capabilities could expose weaknesses in legacy systems widely used by financial institutions

Why it Bites:

A single model forced financial regulators across three countries into emergency coordination in the same week.

The model in question isn't even publicly available.

What's happening here is a preview of a world where the offense/defense asymmetry in cybersecurity gets violently compressed.

Mythos can chain multiple vulnerabilities together autonomously.
Turning individually minor bugs into full exploit chains.

That capability existed in nation-state hacking teams.
Now it exists in an API call.

Anthropic's move to restrict Mythos and hand it to defenders first is the right instinct.

But it also reveals an uncomfortable truth:

The company that builds the most capable model now has to also function as a de facto national security partner, while simultaneously being locked in a legal fight with the Pentagon over military use.

The same institution that needs Anthropic's help is also trying to punish it for having boundaries.

For cyber fellows:

The window between "vulnerability discovered" and "vulnerability exploited" just collapsed from months to minutes.

If your stack runs on legacy systems, this is your wake-up call.
Especially if you work in finance.

The patches are coming.

But do they arrive before the next Mythos-class model ships without guardrails?
