🔑 Musk Just Gave Anthropic The Keys

The Bite:

Anthropic signed a deal with SpaceX to use the full compute capacity of Colossus 1, SpaceXAI's flagship data center in Memphis, Tennessee.

The agreement gives Anthropic access to more than 300 megawatts of capacity and over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, including H100, H200, and GB200 accelerators, by the end of this month.

Anthropic immediately doubled Claude Code's session rate limits for all paid tiers, removed peak-hours reductions for Pro and Max accounts, and raised Opus API rate limits.

SpaceXAI retained Colossus 2 for its own Grok training.

The two companies also expressed interest in developing gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity together.

• Anthropic reported 80x year-over-year usage growth in Q1 2026, which CEO Dario Amodei said caused the compute shortage

Why it Bites:

Elon Musk just became Anthropic's landlord.

Let that sink for a second.

The guy who called Claude "misanthropic and evil" earlier this year is now powering it. That's because his own AI company couldn't use its own supercomputer efficiently enough to justify keeping the lights on for itself.

That's not a partnership.
It's a capitulation dressed up as a lease agreement.

The power shift here is real:

Anthropic was compute-constrained at exactly the moment its usage was exploding. Now it has access to the single largest GPU cluster ever built by a direct competitor, and Musk gets to play a neocloud operator instead of a frontier lab.

SpaceXAI keeps Colossus 2 for Grok, but the signal is clear:

xAI's edge was always supposed to be infrastructure, and they just handed the crown jewel to the company beating them on product.

What this unlocks next is arguably bigger than the deal itself.

Anthropic now has more inference capacity than it knows what to do with, and the orbital compute language in the announcement isn't decorative.

If SpaceX can put GPU racks in orbit and Anthropic can fill them, the compute bottleneck stops being about land and power grids entirely.

And even with that being years out:

…the fact that both companies put it in writing means someone ran the numbers.
