🍭 126 Votes. Zero Doubt. Why? 🎯

Policy Pressure Piles on AI

Good morning. Your chatbot can write your breakup text… but legally cannot comfort you after sending it.

Let’s dive in 👇

🍭 What’s Cookin’:

  • Tennessee bans AI therapists

  • White House drops AI policy plan

  • Tech layoffs tied to AI rise

AI Regulation
🧑‍⚕️ Tennessee Just Made It Illegal for AI to Play Therapist

The Bite:

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed SB 1580 into law, prohibiting the deployment of any AI system that represents itself as a qualified mental health professional.

The bill passed the Senate 32-0 and the House 94-0. It takes effect July 1, 2026.

The law follows multiple incidents involving AI chatbots and minors, including two teen suicides linked to interactions with Character.AI.

At least 78 similar bills are now moving through 27 U.S. state legislatures.
Nebraska and Georgia also have chatbot safety bills expected to pass within days.

Snacks:

  • Combined legislative vote: 126-0. Zero opposition in either chamber.

  • Character.AI and Google settled five major lawsuits related to minor harm in January 2026.

  • Tennessee's law covers development, deployment, advertising, and any public representation of AI as a mental health professional.

  • Oregon signed a similar chatbot safety law earlier this year. Kentucky's HB 227 passed the House 96-0.

  • A December 2025 executive order from the Trump administration directs the DOJ to challenge state AI laws deemed inconsistent with federal policy.

Why it Bites:

126 to zero.

In a legislature that can't even agree on road funding, every single lawmaker voted the same way on AI.

That's not politics. That's fear.

And it's the kind of fear that actually produces law.

Not the vague "AI might be dangerous someday" kind.
But the "a 14-year-old killed himself after a chatbot failed to flag suicidal ideation" kind.

The specificity is what made this bill unkillable.

But here's the tension worth watching.

Tennessee banned AI therapists.

The federal executive order wants to preempt state AI laws that are "overly burdensome."

So a state that unanimously voted to protect kids from unregulated chatbots could get challenged by the DOJ for doing it.

States legislating from real harm
vs.
The White House legislating from innovation policy

This collision is the actual fight that shapes how AI gets regulated in America.

The 78 bills in 27 states aren't a trend.
They're a countdown for AI companies…

Who have a shrinking window to self-regulate before the patchwork comes.
